Akin­tola Hanif’s work “No Reli­gion” will be included in “3rd Wave: The Planet of Brook­lyn Tran­si­tions”, a group exhibit focus­ing on the gen­tri­fi­ca­tion of Brook­lyn. Spon­sored by the Brook­lyn Arts Coun­cil and curated by Phillip Har­vey of Nat Cre­ole Mag­a­zine, the show runs from Octo­ber 13, 2006 — Jan­u­ary 14, 2007.

With the com­ple­tion of 2 short films and 1 PSA, Akin­tola Hanif used his time this sum­mer to demon­strate a com­mit­ment to the chil­dren of his com­mu­nity. The projects, cre­ated for var­i­ous com­mu­nity ser­vice orga­ni­za­tions in Newark, New Jer­sey, encour­age and inspire youth to achieve suc­cess in their per­sonal and aca­d­e­mic lives.

Akin­tola Hanif’s inno­v­a­tive short film, Free­dom or Every­body Dies will be screened at the 12th Annual Black Har­vest Inter­na­tional Fes­ti­val of Film and Video. Pre­sented by the Gene Siskel Film Cen­ter, the fes­ti­val is Chicago?s annual show­case for films that probe and cel­e­brate black cul­ture world­wide. “Free­dom or Every­body Dies” will be screened as part of the shorts pro­gram “Urban Visions” on Sat­ur­day, August 12 at 6:00PM.

Akin­tola Hanif’s first exhibit in his home­lands of Brook­lyn will open at Harriet’s Alter Ego on Sun­day, April 9, 2006. The exhibit, enti­tled The Other Side of Fear, is a look at his work from the past four years and will include a con­ti­nous screen­ing of his short film Free­dom or Every­body Dies. Open­ing April 9 with an appear­ance from the artist, The Other Side of Fear will run through May 7, 2006. Harriet’s Alter Ego is located in Brook­lyn at 293 Flat­bush Avenue.

Freedom or Everybody Dies

Free­dom or Every­body Dies, con­tin­ues to make it’s run at film fes­ti­vals world­wide. Mid­west fans can screen the cut­ting edge short film at the Thank God for Hip-Hop Film Fes­ti­val & Action Con­fer­ence. The Thank God for Hip-Hop Film Fes­ti­val & Action Con­fer­ence will cel­e­brate the bless­ings of hip-hop’s power to effect change in the com­mu­nity.
